Beginning Tuesday, September 1, 2026, the Downtown Motor Vehicle Office will close daily at 5:00 PM. Please plan your visit accordingly - we appreciate your patience as we make this change.
This new closing time applies to the Downtown Motor Vehicle Office only. The Laurel and METRA satellite offices’ hours are not affected by this change.

Each location stops serving title customers 15 minutes before close.
Please bring either a valid Montana driver’s license, Montana ID card, Tribal ID, or a U.S. Passport showing a current and valid physical address in Yellowstone County or a photo ID and two items that can confirm your residency in Yellowstone County.

This location does not accept physical mailing of any documents. All parcels should be mailed to PO Box 35011 Billings, MT 59107.
No cash transactions will be accepted at this location. You may pay by check, money order, cashier check, debit/credit card ONLY. (A 2.5% bank fee will be added to any payment by debit/credit card)
Type of Vehicle Transactions to be completed at this site will be as follows:
- Registration Renewals
- Temporary Registration Permits/40 Day stickers
- Title work.
If you just bought a vehicle from a dealership, we recommend scheduling an appointment for one to eight days before your permit expires. To check on the status of your title work, please reach out to your dealer first. If they confirm that the documents have been sent to our office, you're all set to schedule an appointment or stop by at your convenience.
To avoid waiting in line, The Motor Vehicle Department is currently accepting scheduled appointments in the Billings office and limited walk in transactions for title work. No more than 5 title transactions per customer, per day. For walk in title service, take a ticket to wait for service.
We have opened our Express Renewal window. No more than 5 renewals per customer. Online renewals, link below, are processed the following business day.
Proof of residency is a requirement to title and register a vehicle in Montana.
