2025 ADDITIONAL 2ND HALF TAX STATEMENTS
STATEMENTS WERE MAILED APRIL 29TH
The Montana Legislature passed HB 231 and SB 542 on the final day of the 2025 session; both were signed into law May 13th. The resulting tax rate changes caused the Department of Revenue (DOR) to issue assessment notices more than a month later than usual. This shifted the appeal deadline to one week before the statutory deadline for DOR to certify taxable values, a deadline the Legislature did not adjust. As a result, significant changes to taxable values occurred after certification.
The jurisdictions listed below each experienced taxable value decreases of more than 1%. To ensure those jurisdictions receive the property tax revenue they budgeted for, they have billed additional mills, which increases your second half tax obligation.
Because only jurisdictions with taxable value decreases greater than 1% are subject to this adjustment, and because additional bills are only issued where the amount owed is at least $5.00, not all properties will receive a supplemental statement. A list of jurisdictions rebilling is available below.
Please remember that the local county employees and Department of Revenue employees did not play a role in these decisions and the work they do is centered on complying with laws passed by the Legislature.

The Department also issues real property tax assignment certificates and tax deeds for those properties.
Administration& Fees
The office of the Treasurer receives and disburses all monies, as dictated by state law, and records these transactions. The Treasurer, an elected official, reports to the Montana State Department of Revenue on administrative matters while the County Commissioners have budgetary authority.
The office is divided into two groups. One deals with motor vehicle matters, including registrations, title transfers and applications, and the issuance of temporary stickers and permits. The other serves as the general office for activities including receipts from taxes, fees and intergovernmental transfers. It also processes disbursements, invests funds, maintains bank accounts, seizes tax delinquent property, handles tax protests, and issues moving permits for mobile homes.
There is a 2% penalty and 5/6 of 1% of interest accumulated monthly if taxes are paid delinquent. This applies to real property, personals, mobile, and farm and ranch.
