Proof of residency is a requirement to title and register a vehicle in Montana. Please bring either a valid Montana driver’s license, Montana ID card, Tribal ID, or a U.S. Passport showing a current and valid physical address in Yellowstone County or a photo ID and two items that can confirm your residency in Yellowstone County.

To avoid waiting in line, The Motor Vehicle Department is currently accepting scheduled appointments in the Motor Vehicle office located in the Yellowstone County Courthouse. We do not take appointments for renewals because we have a dedicated renewal line. The Laurel & Metra Motor Vehicle offices do not offer scheduled appointments.

Please note that we have limited walk in transactions for title work. No more than 5 title transactions per customer, per day. For walk in title service, take a ticket to wait for service.

Our Express Renewal window accepts no more than 5 renewals per customer. Online renewals are processed the following business day.

There is a mail box on the front of the courthouse doors that may be used to drop off renewals. You may also mail in your request to Yellowstone County Treasurer PO Box 35011 Billings, MT 59107

Please allow 15 minutes for each title you are transferring. If you have more than one title to transfer, schedule a separate appointment for each title. No more than 5 appointments for title transactions per customer, per day.
